They put the ‘cunt’ back into Country

Warner & Jason – they’ll bust your fucking brains out…

An easy one for you.

(No prizes because I’m a tight cunt.)

Which film classic is this exchange from?

Elwood: Er.. what kind of music do you usually have here?
Claire: Oh, we got both kinds. We got Country, and Western.

Yup – ‘The Blues Brothers’.

(‘Elwood’ was a bit of a clue…)

If you haven’t seen it, you’re probably dead – check yourself for signs of corporeal decay…sniffing yourself might help…

You don’t often hear the expression ‘Country and Western’ any more; it’s usually just referred to as ‘Country’ but it still has a bad rep for some people.

Yes, there’s a lot of dross that’s produced in the name of ‘Country’ – Billy Ray Cyrus with ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ has to shoulder some of the blame; the mulleted shit-weasel – but there’s also some stuff that will, to quote Robert Johnson, bust your brains out.

Cowpunchers and Saloon Gals, I give you – Jason and the Scorchers.

Not exactly Tammy Wynette or Garth Brooks, are they?

Probably more appreciated in Europe, Jason and crew never really broke in the US although, to my mind, they are probably one of the best acts ever to be associated with the term ‘Country’.

They recently reformed for a tour last year and the couple of bootleg recordings I have of that tour show that they’ve lost none of their raw and aggressive style.

The guitarist – Warner E Hodges – is one of my guitar idols. Not just for his brilliant and powerful fret work, but also for his gymnastics and his guitar twirling in particular.

You know that pussy-assed song ‘Take me Home Country Roads’ and that really shit-awful version Olivia Newton John recorded?

Here’s the Scorchers’ take on it.

They don’t just take the song apart; they stick a machete in its guts, disembowel it, steal its wallet, buttfuck it, piss over the corpse and then go looking for its family to do the same.

Enjoy, cowpokes…

And remember, here at Shark Towers, I listen to all the music so you don’t have to.

What you get recommended here is purposely obscure but it’s teh shit.

  1. Hmmmmm…. Not convinced. I like alt-country, but this just sounds like a piss-poor cover band.

  2. Heh…the Scorchers weren’t the most polished live act I suppose.

Each to their own – there’s enough great music for every conceivable taste.

    Alt-country, eh?

Then you might well like what I’ve got lined up for later this week…

  3. Look forward to it. 🙂

  4. Did you ever hear the Dan Baird and Homemade Sin album?
Basically 3/4 of the Georgia Satellites with Warner Hodges on lead guitar. Great stuff.

  5. Oh, indeed, MrP.

I even have a couple of boots of the band – fine, fine music.

Dan is the man…and that’s another great idea for a musical blog post.

    Ta!
