Regardless of whether I smoke – and I do – the current proposals to remove displays of tobacco products by 2011 just smack of a draconian lack of joined up thinking.
Yes, tobacco kills, but so does alcohol.
Unlike alcohol, however, excessive consumption of tobacco doesn’t make people violent and abusive.

This case was handled very well by the UK legal system – with sensitivity and common sense.
Maybe the time has come to legislate to allow some assisted suicides, but the whole procedure is so open to abuse that better an inadequate law that’s interpreted humanely than a well-intentioned one [...]
